Three-dimensional current systems generated by plasmas colliding in a background magnetoplasma

چکیده
Results are presented from an experiment in which two plasmas, initially far denser than a background magnetoplasma, collide as they move across the magnetic field. The dense plasmas are formed when laser beams, nearly orthogonal to the background magnetic field, strike two targets. The merging plasmas are observed to carry large diamagnetic currents. A reconnection event is triggered by the collision and the electric field induced in this event generates a field-aligned current, which is the first step in the development of a fully three-dimensional current system. After several ion gyroperiods, the current systems become those of shear Alfvén waves. As local currents move, small reconnection “flares” occur at many locations throughout the volume, but they do not seem to affect the overall system dynamics. The data clearly show that the induced electric field is carried though the system by shear Alfvén waves. The wave electric fields as well as local magnetic helicity are discussed. © 2007 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.2741462

Magnetic field line reconnection in the current systems of flux ropes and Alfvén waves
Magnetic field line reconnection is still considered, by some, to be one of the most important topics in plasma physics. It has been in this category for close to 30 years and the ‘problem of reconnection’ has still not been solved. Magnetic field topologies are part and parcel of the current systems within a plasma whatever their source. Plasma currents may initially be induced or injected but...

Magnetic reconnection, which occurs in high conducting plasmas, changes the topology of magnetic field lines and converts magnetic energy into the kinetic and thermal energy of plasma and also accelerates charged particles. This phenomenon plays an important role in changing the dynamic of laboratory and space plasmas such as fusion tokamaks and sun’s corona. The electric and magnetic fields ge...
متن کاملThree-dimensional simulations of turbulent spectra in the local interstellar medium
Three-dimensional time dependent numerical simulations of compressible magnetohydrodynamic fluids describing super-Alfvénic, supersonic and strongly magnetized space and laboratory plasmas show a nonlinear relaxation towards a state of near incompressibility. The latter is characterized essentially by a subsonic turbulent Mach number. This transition is mediated dynamically by disparate spectra...
متن کاملLine defects of a two-component vector order parameter.
The line density of line defects in terms of a two-component vector order parameter are obtained from the definition of topological charges of line defects. The spatial structure and bifurcation of line defects in three-dimensional space are also studied from the topological properties of the two-component vector order parameter. The branch conditions for generating, annihilating, colliding, sp...
متن کاملHYBRID COLLIDING BODIES OPTIMIZATION AND SINE COSINE ALGORITHM FOR OPTIMUM DESIGN OF STRUCTURES
Colliding Bodies Optimization (CBO) is a population-based metaheuristic algorithm that complies physics laws of momentum and energy. Due to the stagnation susceptibility of CBO by premature convergence and falling into local optima, some meritorious methodologies based on Sine Cosine Algorithm and a mutation operator were considered to mitigate the shortcomings mentioned earlier. Sine Cosine Al...
